You probably haven't heard about it, but there's a US election campaign underway

It's even reached those of us currently in France, despite the surrounding cocoon of "cheese-eating surrender monkeys".

And how classy are those Republicans! The other day they pretended to be all offended, after Palin referred to herself as a "pitbull with lipstick" before Obama made the entirely reasonable observation that McCain simply calling expressing the same views as the present administration "reform" does not make it so, or, in other words "you can put lipstick on a pig; it's still a pig". "Sexist!" they cried, pathetically, dishonestly. An affront to Governor Palin! Uh, right.

And now they're out there running an attack ad implying that Obama's support for a law to protect children from sexual predators is teaching kids "about sex before learning to read". I don't expect much from either of the established US political parties, but - really. That's not just politics as usual from McCain, it's stooping to a whole new depth. McCain '08 - Lowering The Bar.

John McCain truly has lost whatever principles he once held. You can understand why - it was the reason he lost the nomination to George W Bush in 2000, and he's clearly decided power is more important than principle - but it's still very sad to see. It's almost comical to see him running on his old record as an independent who'll stand up against his party, just as he goes about repudiating everything he ever argued against them and parroting everything they've told him to say, but it's the heartbreaking kind of comical. It's laughable that anyone could really BELIEVE these two mutually contradictory versions of the man, isn't it?

I stood up AGAINST my own party! And I'm now very very sorry and agree with them on everything.

I mean, watch this recent interview with McCain demonstrating just what a maverick, question-answering "change" candidate he really is. JUST ANSWER ONE OF THE FRICKING QUESTIONS YOU'RE BEING ASKED!

PLEASE tell me the American people are not buying the Republicans' half-truths and outright lies again. Guys, a "change" candidate is not just the one who can say the word the most often. It's very definitely NOT a candidate who refuses to acknowledge even one specific thing that the current administration has got wrong.

McCain - Change You Can't Specify

I can understand the rusted-on conservative voters - the ones who think there is only one issue, abortion, or who want to nuke any country that calls America names (Iran), or who are wealthy and just want more tax cuts - voting Republican again. But anyone who's sick of the Bush administration and wants a real change voting for the same party just because their VP candidate is a middle aged woman (rather than a very old white guy who's their presidential candidate) who can say the words "reform" and "change" whilst promising neither? That's beyond stupid.
