Please take me back and attend my press conference!

It's another photo of a politician apologising for a sex scandal, with his wife standing to his side angrily attempting to look supportive...

Do these wives ever simply refuse to attend their philandering husbands' public statements of regret, betraying their families' trust and their intention to go away and work on regaining said trust? Seriously, the wives always seem to be there. Even the ones who have no intention of later running for President. I'd have thought at least a few would tell the men to get stuffed.

Of all the friends I have who've suffered the indignity of a partner straying, I don't know many who, in the midst of accepting his plaintive pleas for forgiveness, about how he can change, how he recognises everything that was going wrong but it'll be different now, how he desperately wants to make it work, would have responded favourably to a request that she go to a press conference and look supportive.

Sorry honey, but you have to be here.

O RLY.

Where are the remorseful pollies showing up to such conferences alone, with bruises?

UPDATE: In his professional capacity, Spitzer is ironically one of those moralising crusaders.

UPDATE #2: The Daily Show takes the piss on this very aspect of the topic.
