Senator Fielding says cutting the fuel excise would be a simple and immediate way of easing the pressure on household budgets.
"People are struggling to make ends meet," he said.
"Petrol has fuelled inflation for the last couple of years. Now this is a significant problem, and it's about time the Rudd Government really got a handle on this issue by cutting petrol tax."
I'm trying to put myself in the shoes of someone who'd think that was a good idea, that the billions it would cost would not simply be absorbed by petrol companies, that it wouldn't "fuel" more inflation (ha ha, Fielding, you're a comedian), that it would save your Australian punter a brass razoo... I just can't do it. It's impossible. It's... hang on - there might be a way!

"It's about time the Rudd Government really got a handle on this issue by cutting petrol tax."
No, not there yet. Feel woozy, but still have sufficient brain function to see the idea as stupid. Ooh, look at this email from Nigeria! I should send that guy some money.

Not. Quite. Can't shake feeling that there must be a reason this never happens, and that the only people who ever propose it are fringe lunatics trying to get some media attention. Wish Andrew Bolt would tell me what to think.

Yay! What he said! Sounds good! Hooray for cheap petrol guy! I'll vote for him! Um, what's a "Rudd"? What's a "government"? Ooh, funny man has glasses.
*slams hand in door*
Ow!
NOTE: Possible alternative explanation to "Fielding thinks you're an idiot": Fielding is himself an idiot.
