My Party (right or wrong)

Former lefty pop-icon, now ALP shadow environment minister Peter Garrett does not believe in compromise:
"I don't believe in compromise, I believe in good solutions and that means bringing everybody along with you as you go," he told ABC radio today.

There's absolutely no way he'd compromise his strong beliefs - say, the opposition he maintains he still has to nuclear power - for any reason whatsoever. Because he doesn't believe in compromise.

Oh, unless the party decided against him and needed his vote:
"But I've also said that I'm a member of the Labor party and I'll abide by the decisions that the party makes," he said.

And if those decisions differ from what I believe on those issues? Uh, well, I'll... LOOK BEHIND YOU! *scurrying noise*

Other core beliefs Peter Garrett has been able to not compromise on during his time in the "Labor" party:
  • His long-standing contempt for the Greens;
  • His long-standing commitment to the logging unions;
  • His long-standing opposition to gay marriage;
  • His long-standing acceptance of neglecting public transport;
  • His long-standing concern for keeping our borders safe from refugees;
  • His long-standing acceptance of ALP Left MPs voting in Parliament in accordance with the dictates of the ALP Right.

Imagine if his core beliefs were different from these. Imagine if Peter was left with the decision to either vote with his conscience or along party lines!

All I can say is, it's just very fortunate that Garrett joined a party so consistently in tune with what he's always stood for.
